Maja Bedić
Vocals, guitar, author of lyrics and music | Guitars: Legend, Epiphone Flying-V, Washburn el. ac., Gibson T. Iommi (custom), Yamaha | Amp: Marshall JCM 900 combo

I was born in Zagreb on 12 September, 1984. I’ve been engaged in music almost all my life. I was the youngest member of the “Bim-bam-bom” choir from Zagreb, with which I was from the age of 2 and a half until 14, performing all over Croatia and in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and where the choir director, Paula Fabinger-Orešković, B.A., taught me how to sing. I attended the 2-year synthesizer course, and, at the age of 9, I started playing guitar and enrolled in primary music school, which I left after 4 years, when the electric guitar became my preference over the classical one. I taught my mom how to play and playing together became fun. Soon, we found ourselves in a band with our first drummer, and when Dado came – that was it, we stayed together ever since.

It has been quite an experience we’ve had as Altera. Although we have not become a huge success, we recorded 3 CDs, for which I wrote the songs, and we’ve played in many places in Croatia, and had a tour in Germany and Switzerland with Hard Time. As we played Nirvana’s songs within shows in memory of Kurt Cobain for several years in a row, we became known as a Nirvana tribute band. Though I like playing a lot and it would be great if we could support ourselves by playing, that is not the case and, after I got my university diploma, I went abroad looking for a job. So, Kriss and Dado go to rehearsals by themselves now, and I join them when I come home. That way we can get ready to play live after only a few rehearsals, as was the case when we played in Hard Place in November 2012.

I like good movies, recently mostly horrors, and all good music. Kriss and me go to a Metallica show somewhere near, usually Italy, each year ever since 2003. That’s our little adventure. I also like animals and have brought home quite a number of stray cats. I don’t like people who are unkind to animals.

Kristina Bedić aka Kriss
Bass, back vocals | Bass: Epiphone, Epiphone Thunderbird

I was born in Zagreb on 22 December, 1960. I’ve always liked good music and, when everybody was listening to Croatian pop singers, I was listening to The Sweet (my first band I was absolutely crazy about), The Beatles, Thin Lizzy, Mungo Jerry, T-Rex… then, The Rolling Stones (the next band I was absolutely crazy about), Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimmi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers Band, Janis Joplin… you know, all the good stuff, and further on, to Nirvana (the third band I still am absolutely crazy about), Metallica (the fourth band I am absolutely crazy about), and Megadeth (the fifth band I am absolutely crazy about)… This is to give you the idea of my musical affinities.

I am Maja’s mom, and the mom of Stjepan, 4 years older than Maja, and when they were kids, I never imagined I would end up playing in a band, not to mention with one of them, and especially not that I would be playing Nirvana covers and our quite lively songs with Maja. But I kind of like the way things turned out and I wouldn’t give all this band experience for anything in the world. When you pick up that guitar (bass), all your problems come down to playing the songs right, giving all your heart to it, and everything else disappears. Especially if you play on a stage.

So, although it has been “pay-to-play” for us mostly, I still like it and will keep on doing it as long as Maja and Dado want me to. I like being the “mom on bass”. My job is translating and I like it too, but, if my life was reduced just to sit at the desk and switch texts from Croatian to English and vice versa… it would be… – it would not be as good as it is with all the rehearsals, recordings, gigs, writing these texts about the band, putting our videos to Youtube… and all the things you do for the band you love.

I also like painting, but don’t have much time for that, and paintings and good movies. Every once in a while, I can’t help taking pity on a poor little kitten someone heartless has thrown away, so I gathered quite a “collection” of them – 9 presently – and I love them all.

Dado Barbir aka Dado
Drums | Drum set: Tama

I was born in Ljubuški on 3 March, 1977. From my early teenage years, I wanted to play drums. I got engaged in music in the secondary school, and finally bought my first drum set when I was 18. I spent my childhood in Ljubuški, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and, after I finished primary school, I moved to Split, where I finished secondary school and then moved to Zagreb. I enrolled in the Rock Academy where I was playing drums for many groups practicing guitar playing, and that’s where I met Maja and Kriss and joined them in Altera. After only two months of rehearsals, we had our first gig within the presentation of Marshall amps at The Rainbow Music Shop in Zagreb and we kept on playing, and performing live, and recording… ever since.

Before playing drums, I played football in the “Hajduk” football club and I was a member of a parachuters club. I have a job for which I travel all over Croatia, and, even if I sometimes hardly manage to make it on time for the rehearsal and come totally tired, straight from the road, I always go home light as a bird, that much that music of ours means to me. I like being in Altera and all the things we’ve shared as a band, together with the associate member of Altera, Masha, which is now my wife, who’s been recording videos of us and photographing us and helping us in many ways.

I like animals and Masha and me have a dog and a cat. I also like all good music and attending good concerts, as well as good movies. Although I’m not related to Maja and Kriss, we are kind of like a family and hang out together a lot.
